As people of the United Methodist Church we share basic Christian beliefs with other Christian denominations.
God: We believe in one God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, also known as our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer.
Jesus Christ: We believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is fully divine and fully human. We believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. Jesus, who was without sin, suffered and died on a cross for the sins of all humankind. Jesus was dead in a tomb for three days and on the third day rose from the dead in body and spirit. Belief in His resurrection promises us hope and eternal life.
Scripture: We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. The Holy Spirit breathes life into the scriptures and keeps them forever contemporary.
Baptism: As United Methodists we practice baptism of persons of all ages. We baptize with one of three methods; immersion, pouring or sprinkling. When we baptize infants we give God our thanks and our praise for His wonderful gift of children. We welcome baptized children into the kingdom of God and into the nurture of a caring church family.
Communion: As United Methodists we welcome all people to the table during Holy Communion (also called the Last Supper or the Eucharist), which we traditionally celebrate on the first Sunday of each month as well as at other special times throughout the year.
Outreach: At First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, we take seriously the Great Commandment in Luke 10:27, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself." We understand that true love of God includes love of neighbor. We openly reach out into our community and our world to share the love of Jesus Christ. We believe we are the hands and feet of Jesus and are called to share His love and serve those around us. We welcome all people into our church family. We seek to be the light of Jesus Christ in Greensboro, Lake Oconee and throughout our community.
Our library at the South Campus offers a large variety of books concerning United Methodist beliefs. Books on United Methodist beliefs are also available for purchase at the Cokesbury Bookstore website.
